In July 1947, the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University provided $250 to fund an expedition by Zheng Wanjun's assistant Hua Jingchan (Ching-Shan Hwa 1921–present) to collect seeds for the arboretum from the Metasequoia type tree in Moudao, and trees in the nearby Metasequoia Valley (Shuishaba Valley). Professors Zheng Wanjun (Cheng Wan-Chun) and Hu Xiansu (Hu Hsien-Hsu) made the pivotal connection between Miki's fossil genus and the living samples in 1946, and provided the specific epithet " glyptostroboides", after its resemblance to the Chinese swamp cypress ( Glyptostrobus). The samples were determined to belong to a tree yet unknown to science, but World War II postponed further study. In 1943, Wang Zhan (Chan Wang, 1911–2000) of the National Bureau of Forest Research, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Chongqing, collected samples from an unidentified tree in the village of Moudao ( 谋道 镇 formerly Motaochi, Maodaoqi or Modaoxi) in Lichuan County, Hubei province-now believed to be the same tree Kan discovered. This tree formed part of a local shrine, where villagers called it Shuǐshān 水杉 or "water fir". Unfortunately, while he collected some plant material, he did not attempt to identify or publish his findings. Though unaware of Miki's new genus, he recognized the unique traits of the tree. In the same year, Kan Duo (Toh Kan, 1903–1961), professor of Forest Management, National Central University, Chongqing, (formerly Chungking) observed an enormous living specimen while performing a survey in Sichuan and Hubei provinces. He realized he had discovered a new genus, which he named Metasequoia, meaning "like a sequoia". Shigeru Miki from Kyoto University identified a divergent leaf form. While studying fossil samples of the family Cupressaceae, Dr. When the genus Metasequoia was first described in 1941, it was from Mesozoic Era fossils, none of which were less than 150 million years old. Metasequoia glyptostroboides (dawn redwood) bonsai treeĪlthough it was commonly known from the fossil record from across the northern hemisphere, the dawn redwood was considered extinct until the mid-twentieth century.

Tried reinstalling it, I'm missing some sort of MSnet1.1 update - downloaded that, installed Boris Graffiti LTD again (probably wouldn't have had to), and have worked through your tutorial - it's short, sweet, to the point and got me going - thanks. Figured a reinstall of Boris might fix the problem - then, discovered that I don't possess Graffiti on a disc (my V5 was the downloaded version), spent quite a while looking for a Graffiti download on the Vegas site - finally figured out that it is listed as part of the Vegas 5 update page. I discovered upon trying to launch Graffiti this morning, that I had some sort of missing or corrupt quicktime dll. Actually, shortly after posting the previous reply, I stumbled onto a link to your tutorial, and have spent the morning playing (or attempting to play) with it. Boris will render exactly what you see in the Composite window so make sure you turn up the quality before rendering. Thanks, Johnny. In the Composite window (upper right) under the Preview menu select Toggle Quality (Ctrl+T) and then render again. Any suggestions?īefore you render in Boris you have to toggle the quality. > BTW, so far, text I've rendered seems very blurry when pulled to the vegas timeline - even if I selectively prerender. Not one of them! That’s when I decided to write my own. ) Seriously, I tried to go through the tutorials from Boris and the LTD version is so hacked up that NONE of the tutorials could be completed. I think I may have actually broke down in a weak moment and Read The Fine Manual. > Tip: If the font tab is empty, you need to manually add your Windows fonts I'm curious how you ever figured this out. Is it possible you have a greay palette selected? Click the dropdown in the upper left corner of the color tab and see if there are other palettes available to you. My color tab has a dropdown list of palettes. If I click to add - only more grey boxes appear. Double clicking on it offers no response from my system. I’ve been preparing for my trip to NAB2005 and we’re launching a few new products that needed some last minute tweaks so I’ve been extremely busy. I've made more progress (albeit a tiny increment) today than I have in a coujple of years - thanks, Roy. Now, then, I got the text to move just as you instruct - how would I make it move to a point, then, stop and stay there - displayed for a few seconds? It appears I cannot simply add duplicate key frames - click the cursor ahead and insert a keyframe without moving the title - so, how would I do that?Īlso, under the styles tab, my options for changing the text color don't appear to be working correctly - I can only seem to get black and white text - clicking the color tab does nothing. Between the counter and the N1 Centre there’s a strange set of what can best be described as stairs/shelves where you can also sit (take a look at the gallery). The counter’s on the right-hand side, with a series of bars opposite, looking out onto the balcony. You can sit outside, with a choice of the tables downstairs, a few more on the upper level, or the balcony hanging over the entrance to the N1 Centre. You enter either up the three flights of steps or via the upper level of the N1 Centre. The shop’s long and thin, not the most promising layout. What makes Tinderbox for me (and always has) is the atmosphere and eclectic seating. Served in a classic, white tulip cup, it was commendably short without approaching ristretto levels. This won’t win any third-wave enthusiasts over: it’s fairly unadventurous, smooth, with a hint of bitterness (ie just how I like it). Sadly David passed away in 2008 at the age of 42, but the links to Matthew Algie continue, Tinderbox using its Gama espresso blend. There’s also another London branch in the Paperchase on Tottenham Court Road. Tinderbox started life in Glasgow (four branches), set up by David Williamson, Managing Director of Glasgow’s Matthew Algie. Going back to the tube at Angel, I passed Tinderbox and made a mental note to visit. Then, a couple of months ago, I was visiting Vagabond N7 and Brewsters N7. I remembered it when I started the Coffee Spot, but I allowed my head to be turned by the new and exciting places springing up all over London, most of them not even a twinkle in their owners’ eyes when Tinderbox first appeared.ĭear Tinderbox, I apologise. The trade show moved to Manchester a few years ago and, with no reason to visit, my neglect of Tinderbox began. Relief flooded over me and I positively skipped up the stairs to get my fix. Heart-broken, I wandered abjectly until, completely by accident, I stumbled across Tinderbox, now relocated to the upper level of the N1 Centre. I attended the show every year and looked forward to my annual Tinderbox visits. Back then it was on Upper Street itself, where its trademark quirky atmosphere and great coffee meant it stood out from the crowd. I first came across Tinderbox almost 10 years ago while attending a trade show at the Business Design Centre. You can read more of my thoughts after the gallery. January 2015: Sadly Tinderbox closed at the end of last year. Tinderbox also has savouries such as sandwiches and stuffed flat breads. The cakes are pretty impressive, with cheesecakes and traditional Italian offerings such as cannoli, plus Portuguese favourites pastel de nata and bolo de arroz. It’s also one of a growing number of places where you can get decent coffee after six o’clock in the evening. It has an uncomplicated attitude, with a straightforward coffee and cake offering, along with a quirky attitude and layout that always makes it fun to visit. I’ve been going there for almost 10 years and it’s still one of my favourite spots. Second only to the Boston Tea Party on Bristol’s Park Street, Tinderbox has a long-standing place in my affections. Walk past the counter, up three flights of stairs at the back and you’ll find yourself in one of London’s most eclectic coffee spaces. Stand outside, though, and look up you’ll see a balcony which promises more. From the street, it’s fairly unassuming: a couple of tables outside and what looks like a short corridor with a counter on the left and a bar at the back. Tucked away in the Upper Street entrance to the N1 Centre in Islington, you’ll find Tinderbox. You can purchase tyre upgrades over at the tuning shop, and apply them here. Here you can select the tyre compound for both your front and rear tyres. The tyres tuning option is one of the easiest to manage in GT7. This could mean removing certain upgrades or focusing on upgrades that matter most for a particular track and removing others. As you upgrade your car with better parts, the PP will increase in line with the performance.īy having events that use a restricted PP as an entry requirement, you are often left to tinker with your car to meet this restriction. Elements such as a car’s power, acceleration stats and tyre performance will affect the overall PP rating. There are a wide variety of aspects that affect your car’s PP rating, and these areas are upgradable via tuning parts and settings sheets. Many race events will have a restriction on the PP rating, which will ensure racing is relatively even in terms of car performance. Much like other games such as Forza Motorsport has car classes (A class, B class, etc) Gran Turismo 7 uses a car’s PP rating to ensure racing is competitive. Every car has a PP rating and it shows the overall performance of that specific car. Performance points (PP) are the lifeblood of car tuning and upgrading in Gran Turismo 7. Saving multiple settings sheets allow you to quickly select different car setups for different scenarios. Once you are happy with the adjustments that you have made, you can either take your car out on track to see and feel the results. This will calculate the changes in your car’s performance giving you a quick indicator of how your adjustments have affected your car’s setup. ForceTec installations exceed the requirements of MIL-N-25027 for torque and pushout. The expansion creates high interference between the barrel and the structure that allows the nut plate to resist torque and pushout. Instead, ForceTec is fastened to the structure by radially expanding the ForceTec nut plate barrel into the hole. ForceTec eliminates the need for satellite holes and rivets, which are required for most nut plate installations. The interim manager of the Brukenthal National Museum, Alexandru Constantin Chituță, said: “For the history of Transylvania and Romania in particular, but also for the history of Europe in general if these results are accepted by the scientific community they will mean the addition of another important historical figure in our history.” Not only do we hope that this encourages further debate about Sponsian as a historical figure, but also the investigation of coins relating to him held in other museums across Europe.” High magnification microscopic analysis performed there, following the research on the coin at The Hunterian, has revealed similar evidence of authenticity.Ĭurator of Numismatics at The Hunterian, Jesper Ericsson, said: “This has been a really exciting project for The Hunterian and we’re delighted that our findings have inspired collaborative research with museum colleagues in Romania. Another is in Brukenthal National Museum in Sibiu, Romania. Only four coins featuring Sponsian are known to have survived to the present day, all apparently originally from the 1713 hoard. The research team used powerful microscopes in visible and ultraviolet light, as well as scanning electron microscopy and spectroscopy – studying how light at different wavelengths is absorbed or reflected – to study the coins’ surface. The new study is the first time scientific analysis has been undertaken on any of the Sponsian coins. This has been the accepted view until now. Coins from the hoard were dismissed as fakes because of the way they looked. However, from the mid-19th century, attitudes changed. When the coins were discovered in the early 18th century, they were thought to be genuine and classed alongside other imitations of Roman coins made beyond the fringes of the empire. Recognizing this and unable to receive official issues from the mint in Rome, Sponsian seems to have authorized the creation of locally produced coins, some featuring an image of his face, to support a functioning economy in his isolated frontier territory. Surrounded by enemies, Sponsian may have been a local army officer forced to assume supreme command during a period of chaos and civil war, protecting the military and civilian population of Dacia until order was restored, and the province evacuated between 271 and 275 CE.Ĭoinage has always been an important symbol of power and authority. Archaeological studies have established that the area was cut off from the rest of the Roman empire in around 260 CE. The Roman province of Dacia, a territory overlapping with modern-day Romania, was a region prized for its gold mines. Our evidence suggests he ruled Roman Dacia, an isolated gold mining outpost, at a time when the empire was beset by civil wars and the borderlands were overrun by plundering invaders.” Pearson (UCL Earth Sciences) said: “Scientific analysis of these ultra-rare coins rescues the emperor Sponsian from obscurity. The team also found a pattern of wear and tear that suggested the coin had been in active circulation. These minerals were cemented in place by silica – cementing that would naturally occur over a long time in soil. Credit: Pearson et al., 2022, PLOS ONE, CC-BY 4.0 They found minerals on the coin’s surface that were consistent with it being buried in soil over a long period of time and then exposed to air. But the manual is very well done, and the handling is still fairly intuitive, although it is less easy to adjust a Boss. The problem often chosen when using the G-Force is the editing of presets. I really liked a publisher of PC-based presets, but I have not found. 202 factory programs and 128 users I believe in (I only have 40 so far). This multi-effects are all there from classic, with analog input / output jack (6.35) or digital (SPDIF), and the whole shebang midi in / out / thru, and a pedal input of expression. Well, I will not list the available effects, that are going on their site to know and listen to some sounds. I'm sure there's a niche of customers who would adore this product, I'm just not sure I' m one of them. However, some of these sounds are very difficult to recreate elsewhere, and some of the ambient textures would be very useful for someone who makes ambient or very spacey music. I think that this is a ridiculously expensive piece of gear, and that anyone willing to shell out the money for it had better realize how frustrating and time-consuming it may be. I hate having to sift through a million lackluster or annoying settings to find the good ones. I love the wide variety of textures that can be easily created using this machine. For all of these wildly innovative effects, there are a ton that are wild and foreign but have no real practical application, which makes it frustrating to find the good ones. Playing two notes on some of these settings will produce an ominous drone that sits in the bottom of your stomach. Some sounds produce gorgeous, orchestral multi octave washes of sound that are very soothing. Some settings will harmonize, even pitch correct, every note that you play and continually loop sounds and replace them in a manner similar to a Steve Reich piece. Some settings produce wild harmonization’s and polyphonies that repeat in an ambient fashion from just a few randomly plucked notes. Some of the effects that this thing produces are jaw-dropping. Using it with a bass or keyboard would produce some truly freaky sounds, as running the guitar through this thing is enough to bewilder just about anyone. However, it is a chore for anyone who isn't dedicated to finding buried treasures. The manual does a decent job of explaining how to program and shift through all of these various effects. Each preset ranges from a basic effect (reverb, phaser, vibrato) to a complex combination of effects and algorithms. Getting through these sounds can be a huge pain sometimes, simply because there are about a thousand presets to choose from. This effects unit is a combination of reverb, delay, harmonizer/octavizer, vibrato, chorus, phaser, flanger, and almost any other effect except for distortion.
